50 years of Conservation Assistance
Oscoda Conservation District is celebrating 50 years of conservation in June. The founding members Melvin Shantz, Fred Klimmek, Forrest Handrich, Glenn Sharp and Richard Yoder, wrote in the organizing documents that the district was needed “for land use help and guidance.” Their initial plan was to provide “on-the-farm technical service.” They thought that the “farms should be mapped to show capabilities.” Their major emphasis was on “helping the man trying to make a living on the farm.”
The original resource assessment stated that the purpose of the District was to provide “a uniform and coordinated program in land use, management and planning.” They wanted to improve agricultural practices such as “soil testing, fertilizer application and water management”. “Drainage is [was] recognized as a problem in the county” at that time.
The founding members also recognized that forestry, recreation and wildlife conservation were important in the county. They were prepared to cooperate with partner agencies to provide opportunities for technical assistance and resource education.
The Mission Statement for today’s Conservation District hasn’t strayed from our founding principles. “To encourage, support and guide in the wise use, maintenance and restoration of our natural resources through technical assistance, partnership and education programs.” We still partner with other agencies to assist with managing our natural resources. Soil, water, air, wildlife, forestry and recreation are still our primary emphasis. Commemorate a special person or event by donating a white pine or white spruce. Your contribution will replace countless trees lost due to pest, disease and declining age in the Oscoda County Park Campgrounds.
Your Living Tribute will be placed in the park where it is needed along with an engraved
4" by 8" brick marker.
